The North Greenville University Crusaders played a double header against the Carson-Newman Eagles at Ashmore field Wednesday. In game one, the Crusaders were on top 4to3 heading into the 7th inning when Carson-Newman used back-to-back doubles to send the game into extra innings. The game slipped away from the Crusaders in the 8th when two more doubles plated one run which put the Eagles on top 5-4 to seal the deal.

The Crusaders were backed by an excellent pitching performance from senior Grayson Smith, and a 2for3 day from junior centerfielder Randy Stegall, which included a two run homerun and a double.

Story

The NGU Crusaders met the Carson-Newman Eagles today for a double header baseball game. Smith allowed 3 runs, 7 hits, and 1 strikeout in his 5 innings of work.

Sophomore right fielder Justin Walters supported Smith with a beautiful diving play in the 3rd inning, not to mention his 2-3 performance at the plate, clutch RBI, and base on balls. Another offensive star for the Crusaders was junior centerfielder Randy Stegall. Stegall was 2-3 with a 2 run homerun, a double, 2 RBI’s, a walk, and 2 runs scored. Chad Drosieko also contributed in a big way with a 2-4 game which included an RBI and a double.

Story

How do you follow up an exciting extra inning baseball game? How does a no-hitter sound? Game 2 was a two man show led by Eagle pitchers Jacob Lamber (5 innings, 7 K’s, 0 hits) and Michael Elli (2 innings, 2 K’s 0 hits). The pair joined forces to not only throw a gem of a game, but also to no-hit the Crusaders, whose bats had been warmed up nicely as of late.

Junior Crusader Chad Drosieko pitched a whale of a game, allowing 3 runs, 1 earned run, 8 hits, and 4 K’s. One key to Drosieko’s quality start was his ability to get out of tough situations. Dro found himself with a runner in scoring position 10 times, but was able to keep the runners at bay 7 times, with only 1 of the allowed runs being attributed to him. Pitchers Chad Drosieko and Grayson Smith exhibited this ability in their respective games today, which is why the Eagles were held to only 4 earned runs in their combined 12 innings of work.

The weather was a perfect fit for a ball game, and the fans were treated to two good games! The Crusaders played tough, but unfortunately they fell just a little bit short on the diamond today. The Crusaders are playing exciting baseball as of late, and there are plenty of upcoming opportunities to check them out on home turf Ashmore Field. Within the next month there are 16 Crusader home games, with the soonest one coming your way February 27th at 1 p.m. against Fairmont State.

Crusader Player of the Game: Chad Drosieko – 7 Inn, 8 hits, 3 runs, 1 earned run, and 4 strike outs.
