CRUSADERS OPEN SEASON WITH DOUBLE-HEADER SWEEP OF EMMANUEL COLLEGE
February 8, 2011
Tigerville, S.C.—The North Greenville Baseball team opened its 2011 baseball season today winning 2-1, and 8-2, sweeping the Emmanuel College Lions continuing the success from the record breaking 2010 season.
On the mound for NGU to start the season was junior Mike Benjamin. Benjamin pitched a complete first game giving up 1 run (earned) on three hits. North Greenville wasted little time in giving Benjamin a lead to work with in the first matchup. The Crusaders plated two runs in the bottom of the second. The Crusaders first run of the season was an RBI off of the bat of John Reinholz. The line drive single was his first hit and first RBI of his career.
Reinholz later scored on a passed ball to add to the run total. The lone run for the Lions came on a solo home run in the fourth inning. Emmanuel threatened to tie the game in the sixth inning. With a runner on third and one out, Benjamin helped himself with a strike out. The Crusaders escaped the inning unscathed following a spectacular diving catch by center fielder John Reinholz for the third out.
The Lions struck first in game two scoring a single run in each of the first two innings .The two runs would be the extent of the scoring for Emmanuel as sophomore Sean Willingham and Nate Richards held the Lions to two runs on three hits. Richards accounted for five strikeouts in just three innings of relief work.
The Crusaders started slow offensively in game two trailing until the third inning. In the third the Crusaders picked up three runs on three hits to take the lead 3-2. The Crusaders would go on to score eight runs on 11 hits.
Game two vs. Emmanuel was an impressive early season offensive showcase for the Crusaders. Brian Giles (2-3), David Frazier (2-4), and Adam Taylor (2-4) all had multi hit games for NGU. Anthony Foulk and Taylor Hollifield both went 1-3.
North Greenville will have little time to rest. The Crusaders will play their third game of the season at home tomorrow against Mars Hill. The first pitch is scheduled for 2pm.
