Crusaders play tough against top-ranked Bobcats

TIGERVILLE, SC- North Greenville University hosted the nation's top-ranked NCAA Division II baseball team Tuesday afternoon at Ashmore Field, but Georgia College and State University came out with an 11-4 victory. Christian Castorri picked up the win for the Bobcats, while Seth Montgomery took the loss for North Greenville.
GCSU got on the scoreboard first when Casey Cullen hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. The Bobcats picked up two more runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 advantage. Justin Mills tripled home a run, and then he crossed the plate on a RBI single by Hans Stancil.
North Greenville lit up the scoreboard for the first time in the bottom of the third inning Mike Reis doubled in Matt Britt. The Bobcats struck back in the fifth inning. Kyle Schisler hit an RBI single to give GCSU a 5-1 lead.
After a scoreless sixth inning, the Crusaders got hot in the seventh. Chris Tate, the team's leading hitter, hit a 2 RBI double to bring Britt and Mark Bordeaux across the plate. Then, Reis scored on a Kyle Baron ground out to cut the lead to 5-4 heading into the top of the 8th.
The Bobcats put up six runs in the final two innings. In the 8th inning, Stancil scored on a ground out, and then Schisler singled in Cullen. In the 9th inning, the Bobcats scored on a wild pitch, a walk, a flyout, and a Sean Harrell single.
Castorri finished with five innings pitched, allowing four hits and striking out four. Montgomery and Kinsler each pitched three innings for the Crusaders. Kinsler gave up two hits and struck out two.
North Greenville will be back in action Wednesday as they travel to Mars Hill College. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown out at 1:00 p.m.
