SIX RUN SIXTH PROPELS CRUSADERS

Box Score

Tigerville, S.C.—The NGU Baseball Team snapped a three game skid on Friday afternoon with a 13-8 victory over West Virginia State University of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The two squads wasted little time getting the offense going as both teams posted runs in the inning. WVSU’s runs came on a two run blast from the right fielder Bo Darby. The Crusaders answered in the bottom of the first scoring three runs on three hits. Short stop David Frazier accounted for two of the three runs with an RBI double. Frazier would later score on a Tyler Callicutt single to put the Crusaders up 3-2.

The Yellow Jackets would strike back in the second inning scoring three runs to take a 5-3 lead. NGU cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the second after Brian Giles scored from second on an Adam Taylor single. Taylor finished the day at the plate going 3-4 with 4 RBI. Two of his RBI’s came on a two run homer in the seventh inning.
West Virginia State went on to add a run in the third inning and two in the sixth.

The Yellow Jackets led the NGU 8-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth when the Crusaders exploded scoring six runs on five hits. Adam Taylor evened the game at eight with a single which scored John Reinholz. Anthony Foulk would score the go ahead run after a Derick Fulmer Single.

The six run sixth inning would prove too much for the Yellow Jackets as relief pitcher Caleb Phillips pitched three shutout innings to secure the win. Drew Provence picked up the “W” after giving up eight runs on 10 hits in six innings of work. Along with Taylor, Tyler Callicutt had an equally impressive day at the plate going 2-4 from the plate with a two run homer and three RBI’s. Brian Giles was 1-2 from plate with three runs scored while David Frazier was 1-5 with three RBI’s and a run scored.

The win improves the Crusaders to 19-9 on the season while WVSU drops to 7-5. The Crusaders and Yellow Jackets will wrap up their three game series tomorrow with a double header starting at 12pm with weather permitting.
