Crusaders fall at St. Andrews

LAURINBURG, NC—Senior leftfielder Will Clark (Laurinburg, NC) sizzled from the plate going 6-for-9 (.667) with two home runs and three RBI, sparking the St. Andrews baseball team to a 5-4 and 13-5 doubleheader sweep of non-conference North Greenville College on Wednesday at Clark Field.

The Knights, who have won seven of their last eight, improved to 11-11 overall. The Crusaders fell to 6-19.

St. Andrews travels to Hartsville, SC, for a three-game weekend series against CVAC rival Coker College. Saturday’s doubleheader starts at Noon while Sunday’s finale is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.

Game 1

Clark went 4-for-4 in the first game including the walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the seventh. Clark, whose game-winner to left-center was his second blast of the season, also scored three times.

North Greenville staked a quick 4-0 lead by plating the first four batters of the game. A Kyle Baron (Dalton, GA) single and a Rick Broadway (Sumter, SC) sacrifice fly scored two of the runs. The other two Crusader runners scored on a wild pitch and a throwing error.

A two-out double by sophomore Andrew Hoffner (Ellicott City, MD) an RBI-single by senior Brad Smith (Riegelwood, NC) scored the Knights first run in the second. St. Andrews continued to chip away with two runs in the third. Clark and senior Anthony Mehling (Pottsville, PA) led off with back-to-back singles. Junior Cliff Allred (Franklinville, NC) singled in Clark and an RBI-groundout by senior Greg Wrape (Hamlet, NC) drove in Mehling.

Clark led off the fifth with a single and a stolen base. Mehling plated Clark for the tying run in with a double that set up the game-winning heroics by Clark in the seventh.

Mehling (2-2) picked up the win on the mound after throwing a 96-pitch complete game. Mehling scattered eight hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out four.

Game 2

The Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the nightcap with a run in the bottom of the first. Mehling singled and swiped second with two outs. Allred followed with a ripped single off a diving third baseman that scored Mehling from second.

North Greenville tied everything at one apiece with a RBI-single by Brett Hamilton (York, SC) in the second. A lead off double by Mike Reis (Cleveland, OH) and a single by Chris Tate (Augusta, GA) that scored Reis lifted NGC into the lead in the second. The Crusaders extended their lead to 3-1 on an error later in the inning.

St. Andrews erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third to catapult into a 5-3 lead. Clark started the rally with his second homer of the day, a two-run bomb to right-center. Four straight two-out singles by Wrape, freshman Jason Cargile (Greenville, NC), Hoffner and Smith scored the final two runs of the inning.

The Knights offensive onslaught did not stop as SAPC scored two more in the forth and six more in the fifth. Eight different St. Andrews batters slugged hits with Smith leading the way with a game-high three base hits. Eastwood scored three times while Clark, Mehling, Allred, and Cargile all had two RBI apiece.

Sophomore starter B.J. Horne (Hamlet, NC) improved to a perfect 2-0 in two starts this season. Horne, who allowed four runs (two earned) on nine hits over 5.0 innings of work, fanned three Crusaders. Senior Scott Adams (Vernon Hill, VA) and sophomore T.J. Chrusch (Fleetwood, PA) each tossed an effective inning of relief.
