Crusaders fall to Eagles

JEFFERSON CITY, TN- The Carson-Newman Eagles baseball team won their 30th game of the season on Tuesday afternoon as they swept a doubleheader against North Greenville, 8-5 and 15-2.

Game 1: Carson-Newman 8, North Greenville 5

The Eagles rallied with five runs in the fifth inning to win game one, 8-5.

Matt Britt (Grayson, Ga.) had a big day for the Crusaders as he went three-for-four with four RBIs which included his first career homerun, a three-run blast that put his team up 5-3 in the fifth inning.

Charlie Munroe (Newton, N.J.) drove in three runs for the Eagles. Mark Carroll (Morristown, Tenn.) picked up the win in relief to improve his overall record to 3-1 in 2006. Gavin Scroggins (Jefferson City, Tenn.) came in to close the game out, notching his sixth save with two strikeouts in the seventh inning.

Game 2: Carson-Newman 15, North Greenville 2

Langdon Potts (Jefferson City, Tenn.), Derrick Calkin (Maryville, Tenn.) and Jim Doran (Newton, N.J.) each drove in three runs as the Eagles prevailed in game two, 15-2.

The Eagles picked up three runs from Doran in the second when he hit a three-run double to left field. The Eagles also had two bases-loaded walks to push the advantage to 5-0. C-N would continue to build on their lead and went to 12-0 with a three-run homerun to left field by Calkin in the fifth.

Potts hit a two-run double to right field in the same inning to make it 14-0. The Crusaders two runs came in the sixth inning when Dustin Pace (Greenville, S.C.) hit a two-run double to bring Chris Tate (Augusta, Ga.) and Carlos Cardenas (Guayaquil, Ecuador) home.

C-N pitchers Brandon Hall (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Mike Ealey (Springfield, Ohio) and Chris Gillies (Wyoming, Mich.) combined for a six-hitter with five strikeouts.

The Crusaders will return to action Wednesday afternoon as they host Southern Wesleyan. Game one of the doubleheader will begin at 2:00 p.m.
