Pacers down Crusaders

AIKEN, S.C.--USC Aiken (38-12) pushed across eight in the bottom of the eighth to break open a one-run game and post a 17-9 win over an upset-minded North Greenville (11-39) on Wednesday night at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. The Pacers close out their non-conference regular season at 26-3, ending on an 18-game winning streak. USCA improves to 10-0 all-time against the Crusaders.

Carlos Cardenas’ two-out single to center field drove in Eric Loy in the first inning as North Greenville jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Cardenas finished 2-for-4 with four RBI while Loy was 3-for-5, scoring three times.

An infield single by Matt Spivey in the bottom of the second got the Pacers on the board and made it a 3-1 game.

After Brett Hamilton’s sacrifice fly in the fourth increased the Crusaders’ lead to 5-1, the Pacers rallied for four in the home half of the inning to knot the game up for the first time at 5-5. A solo home run by Montoya Young and Ken Raborn’s RBI triple to center field highlighted the inning. It was Young’s first homer of his career while Raborn finished 2-for-4 with a team-high three RBI.

Tied 7-7 in the sixth, the Pacers capitalized on two of six
North Greenville errors on the night to take the lead for good at 9-7. Cardenas’ RBI double down the left field line in the seventh trimmed the deficit to a single run at 9-8, but the eight-run outburst in the eighth put the game out of reach at 17-8.

The play of the game happened in the field for the Pacers in the top of the eighth. With two on and two outs, in a 9-8 contest, Mike Wadowski made a diving catch to end the inning on a sinking liner off the bat of Loy that seemed destined to put the Crusaders back on top.

Spivey finished 2-for-2 with two walks and three runs scored while Zach Cooper also scored three times. Casey Derhak, Robert Davis, and Ian Kowalchuk all had two hits and two RBI while Darryl Pui was 2-for-4 and scored twice.

Mike Reis was 3-for-4 for
North Greenville and Chris Tate added two hits and two RBI.

After 4.0 innings from starter Mark Yarbrough, Houston Taylor (2-0) notched the win in 3.0 innings of relief, giving up three earned run on six hits.

Dylan Davidson (3-10) suffered the loss in 2.1 innings of relief of Devin Vance surrendering seven unearned runs on four hits and three walks.

USC Aiken will host #6 Francis Marion in a key Peach Belt Conference series this weekend beginning with a single game on Saturday, April 22 at 6:30 PM. North Greenville will play at North Georgia on Wednesday, April 26 at 8:00 PM.
