Crusaders Suffer First Loss Of 2012

Tigerville, SC – The North Greenville University men’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2012 season as the Bearcats of Lander University defeated the Crusaders 3-2 on Friday night in Pepsi Stadium.


The Bearcats put a goal on the scoreboard early as defender Clement Simonin scored a goal in just the 6th minute of play on an assist from Matthew Bell to go ahead by one goal.

Lander went on to score two more goals in the first half, one from forward Robert Seaton in the 27th minute and another from midfielder Chris Hobbs in the 41st minute, to go into halftime with a 3-0 advantage.

Head coach Chad Gfeller and the Crusaders made adjustments at the break and scored their first goal of the game in the 74th minute of play. Junior midfielder Todd Johnston scored his second goal of the season on an assist from freshman forward Adam Turner to cut into the Lander lead.

The Crusaders continued to put pressure on the Bearcat defense as Turner netted his second goal of season in the 83rd minute on an assist from junior midfielder Ben Montry. North Greenville was pressed for time and Lander was able to hold on for the one goal victory.

The Bearcats outshot the Crusaders 19-10 in the game as senior goalkeeper Justen Braddock recorded a season-high eight saves on the night.

North Greenville (1-1-1) will end its four-game home stand on Saturday, September 15 as they have a week to prepare for the Conference Carolinas opener against Lees-McRae College at 3 p.m. in Pepsi Stadium.
