Tigerville, S.C.—As announced by athletic director Jan McDonald, the North Greenville University athletic department officially added men’s lacrosse to the varsity sports lineup in June. The new program now officially has its first leader, as Corey Struss has been named as the first men’s lacrosse coach in NGU history.
“Coach Struss is a strong Christian who has a passion for the game of Lacrosse,” says Jan McDonald, the athletic director for North Greenville. “He has been successful in building a competitive lacrosse program at the intercollegiate level, and we believe that he will bring that success to NGU. We are excited to have him and lacrosse at North Greenville.”
Struss comes to North Greenville from Ohio Valley University, where he spent a year as assistant coach for the Fighting Scots. In 2012, Struss was named head coach of the Scots, where he spent two seasons, before accepting the job at North Greenville.
Corey Struss graduated from Seton Hill University in 2010, where he was a three year starter at goalkeeper for the Griffins. As a player, the team captain collected numerous accolades including the “most improved” award in 2008, two-time team defensive MVP in 2009 & 2010, and was an All-ECC honorable mention. He helped lead the Griffins to an NCAA Division II #6 ranking in just three years.
“First off, I’d like to thank President Epting, and Ms. Jan McDonald, for this tremendous opportunity. It is a very exciting time for lacrosse in South Carolina, and I look forward to building this program into a perennial contender in Conference Carolinas,” remarked Struss. “It is my first and foremost priority to establish a culture for this lacrosse program that is in line with the university’s mission – one that aims to develop our student-athletes academically, athletically, and spiritually. Between the beautiful campus in Tigerville and the outstanding lacrosse facilities that are in development at NGU, I have no doubt that we will attract some great student-athletes that are interested in a Christian education.”
Corey Struss earned his Bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing from Seton Hill and a Masters of Arts in Education from Ohio Valley University in 2013. The inaugural season for the North Greenville men’s lacrosse team is slated for the spring of 2015.
