Crusaders split at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, TN-- The North Greenville Crusaders gained a split with Carson-Newman College Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles won the first game 8-3, but the Crusaders took the second game 4-2.
C-N (20-12) trailed 1-0 in game one after starter Brett Hontz gave up an RBI single to NGU's Dylan Davidson , but took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Cory McGinnis doubled and later scored on Jim Doran's RBI single. Consecutive RBI singles by Adam Kefauver and Mills Rogers gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead.
McGinnis smashed another double in the third inning and scored along with Doran on Tyler Wynn's 2-RBI single. Wynn scored on Rogers' single to give Carson-Newman a 6-1 lead. Brandon Burchfield and McGinnis hit back-to-back homers in the sixth inning for an 8-3 Eagle victory. Hontz (2-1) picked up the win after going four innings and giving up just one earned run while striking out three Crusader batters.
In the second game, North Greenville plated one run in the first three innings before the Eagles cut into the Crusader lead. Joe Kugler led off the bottom of the third inning with a single and advanced to second on Jonathan McMahon's sacrifice bunt. Kugler scored on an error by NGU's Mike Reis to put the Eagles on the board while Jason Gray's single scored Burchfield to pull C-N to within one run at 3-2.
NGU's Rick Broadway hit a sacrifice fly to give the Crusaders an insurance run for the final 4-2 victory over the Eagles.Justin Higdon (0-2) took the loss for the Eagles after giving up three earned runs and seven hits.
NGU returns home this weekend for a three-game series with Brevard College.
