Baseball drops two at Chowan

MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University baseball team picked up their 20th win of the season this afternoon after sweeping an afternoon doubleheader against North Greenville University 5-1 and 6-1. The Hawks improve to 20-12 on the season, while North Greenville falls to 4-27-1.
Game 1: CU 5, NGU 1
The Hawks jumped on the Crusaders early scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Hawks then went scoreless until they picked up 1 run in the 3rd inning and 2 runs in the 6th inning. The Crusaders were held scoreless until the top of the 7th inning when Rand Stegall's sacrifice fly scored their only run of the game.
BJ Byerly picked up his 6th win of the year for the Hawks pitching 7 innings, giving up 7 hits and striking out 2. The Hawks were led by David Hughes and Zack Beasley who each had 2 hits and 1 RBI. Joey Ryder also pitched in 1 hit and 2 RBI's for the Hawks.
Game 2: CU 6, NGU 1
The Hawks got solid pitching from two freshman starters and banged out 15 hits over 14 innings.
Anthony O'Brien pitching five innings, allowing three hits and one run. The freshman also struck out three Crusaders batters. Brandon Hamlett pitched in relief going two innings, scattering three hits and striking out one batter. Offensively the Hawks were paced by Billy Walling who had the Hawks' only multiple hit game after going 2-4 with one RBI. Jordan Whitlatch had a double and an RBI in the win.
The Crusaders are back in action Tuesday at Tusculum College at 4:00 p.m.
